Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has been elected chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). He was chosen during the bloc’s 69th Ordinary Session and succeeds Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio. Faye assumes leadership at a time of deep unrest and uncertainty, with West Africa grappling with terrorism, democratic backsliding, and the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the organization. One of Africa’s youngest sitting heads of state, he is expected to bring fresh momentum to governance reforms, youth inclusion, and efforts to rebuild regional cohesion. The summit also saw the appointment of Biram Diop as president of the ECOWAS Commission, replacing Omar Touray, as part of broader institutional reforms.
