Senegal’s Modern Griot Keeping Tradition Alive

By DW·Edited by Editor TO·

In times past, griots were central to Senegalese culture. However, this ancient role is dying out, with fewer griots today than ever before. While there is no shortage of musicians, many have swapped the traditional instrument of the griot for modern ones like guitars. But not Amadou Sissoko, a 27-year-old musician, who is bucking the trend. Sissoko began his career as a musician learning contemporary instruments. He later decided to learn traditional instruments instead. Today, he plays 12 of them, including the kora. Amadou’s goal is to make the traditional style of music trendy again. He plans to achieve this by fusing cultural music with contemporary styles. He also organizes workshops to train more griots who can carry the movement forward. He is also organizing a festival with the goal of introducing more people to traditional music.
