African cities are offering travelers increasingly easy access to nature without requiring them to leave urban areas. Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, hosts a national park where lions, giraffes, and zebras roam near skyscrapers, with nearby Karura Forest offering trails, waterfalls, and abundant birdlife. In Rwanda, Kigali’s Nyandungu Eco-Park, a restored wetland, features diverse wildlife and more than 100 bird species. In South Africa, Johannesburg is home to the wildlife-rich Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, while Cape Town’s Zandvlei wetlands support roughly 150 bird species. Sierra Leone’s Freetown boasts the forested Western Area Peninsula and Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary, which bring rainforest experiences close to the city. Ethiopia’s Addis Ababa provides hiking and cycling opportunities in the Entoto Mountains. And in Uganda, Kampala’s wetlands and nearby Entebbe offer lakeside habitats and birdwatching.
