Sierra Leone is positioning itself as West Africa’s next major oil and gas exploration hub, banking on fresh data from its first offshore 3D seismic survey in over a decade. Conducted with GeoPartners and reprocessed by TGS, the results could lead to a new licensing round by October, offering up to 60 offshore blocks. Past discoveries by Anadarko and Lukoil proved non-commercial, but hopes are high with an estimated 30 billion barrels of oil equivalent recoverable. With major firms like Shell and Petrobras showing interest, and comparisons to the recent successes of Namibia and Guyana, officials believe Sierra Leone is on the verge of a transformative energy breakthrough.
