Alphonce Felix Simbu delivered Tanzania its first-ever world title in dramatic fashion, edging Germany’s Amanal Petros in a historic photo finish at the marathon. Both men clocked 2:09:48, but Simbu surged past a diving Petros at the line, winning by just three hundredths of a second—the narrowest margin in championship marathon history. Italy’s Iliass Aouani claimed bronze. The victory marked Simbu’s first global gold, adding to his 2017 world bronze and Boston Marathon silver earlier this year. His triumph came a day after France’s Jimmy Gressier disrupted East Africa’s dominance in the 10,000m, reaffirming the region’s legacy in distance running with a finish as thrilling as any sprint final.
