Mogadishu has offered to extend an existing deal that offers the US access to its ports and airports for military purposes. The announcement came a day after Somaliland, which Somalia views as part of its territory, made a similar proposal to Washington. Somalia and Somaliland, situated in the Horn of Africa, are of vital importance to foreign powers, given their proximity to the Red Sea and, by extension, Yemen, from where Houthi rebels threaten global shipping lanes. Somaliland, which broke from Somalia in 1991 and has since been autonomous, has recently stepped up a diplomatic charm offensive in pursuit of international recognition. Israel recently became the first country to grant this recognition, albeit to heavy criticism from Somalia and its supporters, which include the AU. Somaliland’s offer to the US is in furtherance of its goal of recognition. While President Donald Trump has signaled that he is open to the idea, it remains to be seen whether Washington will actually go through with it, especially given the region’s volatility.
