Somalia has threatened to punish corporate entities that refuse to comply with a directive issued earlier in the year. The Horn of Africa nation had directed that all companies operating within its territory should stop using “Somaliland” in their networks and instead refer to it as part of Somalia. This includes money transfer agencies like Paysii and airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines, which label Somaliland as a separate entity. It threatened to revoke the licenses of non-compliant firms. The move follows Ethiopia’s controversial MoU with Somaliland earlier this year, which strained relations with Somalia. Despite lacking formal international recognition, Somaliland has operated independently since 1991, with its own governance and currency. It argues that Somalia’s actions will lead to Somalia’s isolation on the global stage and reinforce Somaliland’s push for international recognition.
