Somalia’s Supreme Court Rules President’s Term Extension Unlawful

Source: eNCA·Edited by Editor TO·

Somalia’s Supreme Court has ruled that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s one-year term extension was unlawful, finding he should have left office in May. The court said constitutional amendments passed by parliament in March, which opposition parties and regional leaders boycotted, did not apply to his current term. Mohamud’s government had declared a transition period to prepare the country’s first democratic elections, due in April and May 2027. Critics view the reforms as a power grab, and the extension triggered a crisis and clashes in Mogadishu in June. Hours before the ruling, Mohamud announced he was dismissing Chief Justice Bashe Yusuf Ahmed, a move the court called null and void and aimed at obstructing justice. Unconfirmed reports said Ahmed was detained.
