Somaliland Offers Port, Minerals for US Recognition

By Semafor·Edited by Editor TO·

Somaliland’s President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi is offering Washington access to the strategic port of Berbera, mineral resources, and potentially expanded military facilities in exchange for recognition of Somaliland’s sovereignty. The push follows Israel’s landmark recognition of Somaliland in December, which broke a long-standing global consensus and gave Abdullahi new momentum as he lobbies the White House, Congress, and the United Nations this month. Recognition remains the main objective, but Somaliland is also seeking investment and broader economic cooperation. The proposal gives Hargeisa a stronger negotiating position by presenting its geographic location near the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden as a strategic asset. For Washington, closer ties could provide additional security and commercial opportunities in a strategically important corridor. For Somalia, which considers Somaliland’s coastline and resources its own, the proposal is a non-starter.
