South Africa Eyes 2028 or 2029 Grand Prix

By African Business·Edited by Editor TO·

South Africa says it could return Formula One racing to the continent before Rwanda’s planned Grand Prix in the early 2030s. Head of public diplomacy Clayson Monyela said that Pretoria hasn’t failed in its bid to bring the event to the country. He stated that the two countries are pursuing different timelines, with South Africa targeting a race in 2028 or 2029, ahead of Rwanda’s planned Grand Prix in the early 2030s. Monyela highlighted the fact that South Africa already has a potential venue for a race, the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit near Johannesburg, although it will require an upgrade to meet the required certification standards. Additionally, there is a privately funded Cape Town precinct in the works, which will be ready by 2031. However, Formula One’s calendar is limited to 24 races, so adding a new venue may require an existing event to be dropped, rotated, or alternated.
