South Africa has taken another step toward reshaping its energy mix after awarding 890 megawatts of new solar capacity under the seventh bid window of its flagship renewable energy program. Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa confirmed that four solar projects were selected following value-for-money negotiations, attracting nearly $1 billion in investment. Three projects in the Free State went to Red Rocket South Africa, while Engie will develop a facility in the North West province. The awards fall under the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP), launched in 2010 to draw private capital into clean energy. The initiative has brought over 6,500 MW of clean energy online since 2012. Together, the projects reinforce South Africa’s push to cut coal dependence and speed up decarbonization.
