South Africa’s signature friendliness—often heard in a cheerful “howzit”—has earned global recognition after a new survey ranked the country among the world’s most polite. A study by Remitly polled more than 4,600 people across 26 nations and placed South Africa 10th overall, ahead of several major travel destinations, including the US and Ireland. The research found that politeness extends beyond basic manners, highlighting everyday acts like helping strangers, showing patience with language barriers, and offering courtesy in public spaces. Furthermore, locals showed confidence in their own hospitality, landing eighth in self-perception. The country also earned a spot among the top 15 friendliest nations, reinforcing its reputation as a welcoming destination for visitors and newcomers alike.
