South Africa is racing to bring Formula 1 back to the continent for the first time since 1993, and President Cyril Ramaphosa is personally joining the charge. Alongside Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie, Ramaphosa will attend an F1 Grand Prix later this year on a working visit to engage with stakeholders and strengthen the nation’s bid. The historic Kyalami circuit, just north of Johannesburg, is the front-running venue, with FIA-approved upgrade plans already in motion. However, South Africa faces stiff competition from Rwanda and Morocco. The bid has received a massive boost from seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, who recently stated that he has been “fighting in the background” to ensure he can race in Africa before his career concludes.
