South Africa’s state-owned logistics operator Transnet has completed the restoration of the Cape Mainline after severe storm damage in May disrupted a critical freight corridor for more than two months. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding on May 11 and 12 damaged railway infrastructure, closing sections of the line. The route links Cape Town with the country’s inland rail network and carries containers, agricultural products, industrial goods, and minerals between the Port of Cape Town and the economic heartland. Transnet Rail Infrastructure Manager said the line first reopened to diesel trains on July 31, before electric services resumed in August 2026. The reopening restores an important link for the movement of commodities and manufactured goods.
