South Africa is racing to secure new energy partners as the intensifying Middle East conflict threatens to dry up the nation’s fuel taps. With the vital Strait of Hormuz effectively bottlenecked, Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe warned that the disruption of refined product shipments now poses the single greatest risk to the country’s economy. The vulnerability is compounded by the fact that South Africa has lost roughly half its refining capacity in recent years due to plant accidents and chronic underinvestment, making it increasingly reliant on Middle Eastern imports—particularly from Oman, Bahrain, and the UAE. The crisis is a stark reminder of just how exposed energy-dependent African economies remain to geopolitical shocks far from their own borders.
