South Africa Seeks Gulf Expertise on New Property Plan

By Moneyweb·Edited by Editor TO·

South Africa is drawing on Gulf expertise as it prepares a new state company to manage its $9.5 billion property portfolio. Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson said Middle Eastern sovereign wealth funds advised South African authorities to create a fundraising vehicle, and officials have consulted the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on a development fund. South Africa has ambitious infrastructure targets. To achieve these targets, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the South African National Property Company in February, with work ongoing toward its launch. The company will oversee 88,000 buildings and 5 million hectares of land. However, Pretoria says the government cannot finance the company’s entire infrastructure pipeline alone. Officials estimate that achieving the country’s infrastructure targets will require roughly $98 billion in public investment and $196 billion from private companies by 2030.
