South Africa Sees Record Number of Candidates in Local Election

South Africa is heading toward its November 4 local elections with an unprecedented number of candidates, highlighting a sharp rise in competition for municipal power. The Electoral Commission says over 130,000 candidates have met the requirements to contest seats, a 43% increase from the 95,427 candidates who competed in 2021. Of the latest total, political parties nominated 98,219 for ward contests and 38,571 for Proportional Representation contests. Meanwhile, 621 independent candidates were nominated for ward races. The number of available seats, however, has increased only marginally, from 10,478 to 10,526. That means the surge represents substantially more competition for essentially the same municipal positions. Political parties and independents stand to gain greater opportunities to challenge incumbents, while existing officeholders face a more crowded contest. In the longer term, the participation surge could reshape local political competition and accountability.
