South African designer Xolela Madlanga is building a distinctive creative business by using patterns, shapes, and lines to tell African stories. The 33-year-old draws inspiration from Ndebele designs, Johannesburg’s skyline, and the landscapes surrounding her hometown of Mthatha. Her work spans fashion, ceramics, cushions, and visual art, offering brands culturally rooted designs without relying on stereotypical representations. Madlanga has collaborated with Nigerian fashion label Alia Bare and South African brands House of Sebo and Tsikane African Decor. Selected as one of 15 finalists from 700 applicants for the 2026 Création Africa program, she now hopes to partner with more local fashion, interior, and footwear brands.
