
Men in a Johannesburg informal settlement are joining efforts to confront South Africa’s severe gender-based violence crisis by discussing accountability, emotions, and healthier models of masculinity. At meetings organized by the positive masculinity-promoting nonprofit, Father A Nation, participants are encouraged to examine their behavior and become role models in their communities. The initiative comes amid renewed concern over femicide following the discovery of 12 women’s bodies in Ekurhuleni over three months. Between April and June, 5,427 people were murdered in South Africa, including 569 women, while another 1,052 women survived attempted murder.
