South Africa’s Constitutional Court has ruled in favor of the African National Congress (ANC), ordering the Electoral Commission of South Africa to include 181 party candidates on ballots for the November 4 local elections. The dispute concerned nominations across six municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal, the Free State, and the Eastern Cape. The ANC argued that a technical failure in the electoral commission’s online system prevented its candidate lists from being properly recorded, despite the party submitting them before the deadline. The Electoral Court had previously rejected the challenge, but the Constitutional Court overturned that decision in a majority judgment. The ruling restores the affected candidates’ opportunity to contest elections and gives the ANC additional electoral options.
