South Africa’s Economy Expands After Rebasing

South Africa’s economy is approximately 5% larger than previously estimated following a comprehensive rebasing exercise, further widening its lead over Nigeria as sub-Saharan Africa’s largest economy. Statistics South Africa said the country’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP) for 2025 had been revised upward to $483 billion, from roughly $459 billion. The exercise changed the GDP calculation’s base year from 2015 to 2022 and incorporated previously unrecorded economic activities, including self-generated electricity, informal manufacturing, illegal mining, and e-hailing services. All 10 tracked sectors recorded higher output, with mining, finance, and trade experiencing the largest revisions. The adjustment also improves South Africa’s debt-to-GDP ratio, potentially strengthening its fiscal position as the government works to reduce public debt. Nigeria’s comparable GDP stood at $328 billion.
