South Africa’s foreign minister, Ronald Lamola, has questioned whether US ambassador Leo Brent Bozell III should remain in his post. Lamola’s comments followed Bozell’s warning that Washington had run out of patience with Pretoria and that the period for dialogue was over. Lamola responded that a diplomat who no longer wants to talk should leave. Bozell was referring to the Trump administration’s demands on South Africa, including the repeal of race-based policies aimed at addressing apartheid’s legacy. The spat is the latest example of the tensions between the Trump administration and the South African government, with Pretoria issuing a diplomatic protest against Bozell over what it deemed undiplomatic conduct. It would be the second time in seven months that Pretoria has reprimanded Bozell.
