South Africa is expected to produce 3.6% more maize in the 2025/2026 season than the previous year, according to the government’s Crop Estimates Committee. The estimate, at 17.255 million metric tons, exceeds the committee’s previous forecast released in May, reflecting improved crop conditions. White maize, the country’s primary staple food, is projected to account for 9.283 million metric tons, while yellow maize, mainly used for animal feed, is expected to reach 7.972 million metric tons. The stronger harvest is expected to improve domestic food supplies, support livestock production, and reinforce South Africa’s position as one of Africa’s leading maize producers, while helping stabilize regional grain markets following recent weather-related production challenges.
