South Africa’s Wealthy Donors Channel Millions into Philanthropy as Giving Shifts
More than 72,000 affluent South Africans donated approximately $349 million to charitable causes in 2025, with women and Black donors taking the lead in the country’s philanthropy landscape for the first time. The latest Giving Report found that 86% of wealthy respondents contributed through cash, goods or volunteer work, generating R2.9 billion in cash donations, a further R2.9 billion in non-cash contributions and 3.1 million volunteer hours. Religious beliefs and concern for specific causes remain the strongest motivations for giving. However, formal philanthropic structures are still uncommon, with many donors preferring collective giving through religious organisations, stokvels and community associations. As South Africa’s wealthy population expands, the findings highlight the growing potential of private wealth to support social development, while raising questions about how this generosity can translate into more structured and sustained investment in communities.
