South Sudan has postponed its December 2024 elections by two years, citing the need to complete vital processes. These processes include conducting a census, drafting a permanent constitution, and registering political parties. According to the Presidential Adviser on National Security Tut Gatluak, the election will now hold on December 22, 2026. This is the second delay since South Sudan embarked on a transitional period in February 2020. The delay comes amid several challenges, including an economic crisis that has left civil servants unpaid for almost a year and stalled peace talks with disgruntled groups in neighboring Kenya. While some warn that holding substandard elections would be wasteful, others fear further postponements could trigger violence.
