In a surprising reversal of an earlier decision, South Sudan has now agreed to admit Makula Kintu, a deportee from the United States who was initially denied because of a nationality mix-up. This U-turn comes after the US imposed a blanket visa ban on South Sudanese citizens, citing the government’s failure to receive deportees “in a timely manner.” South Sudan claimed it refused to accept Kintu because he presented travel documents belonging to someone else. Authorities later identified him as Congolese, not South Sudanese. However, the government now says it will admit him “in the spirit of friendly relations” with the US.
