Sudan and Ethiopia Expel Each Other’s Diplomats

Source: Al Jazeera·Edited by Editor TO·

Sudan and Ethiopia have reportedly shut each other’s consulates and expelled diplomatic staff in a tit-for-tat escalation of already strained relations. Ethiopian authorities ordered six Sudanese consulate employees in the border town of Asosa to leave, and Sudan retaliated by shutting Ethiopia’s consulate in Gadarif and declaring its diplomats persona non grata. The moves follow mutual accusations of interference in each country’s conflicts. Sudan has alleged that Ethiopia is allowing the Rapid Support Forces, which are fighting Sudan’s army, to operate from its territory. Ethiopia has accused Sudan of supporting rebels in the Tigray region. Both deny the allegations. Ethiopia also recently expelled Eritrean and Egyptian diplomats, deepening fears that overlapping conflicts could spark a wider Horn of Africa war.
