Sudan has rejected a UN call for the immediate deployment of an “independent and impartial force” to protect civilians displaced by the country’s ongoing conflict. The war, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary RSF, has claimed tens of thousands of lives and caused a severe humanitarian crisis, displacing eight million people. UN experts, who had been on a fact-finding mission regarding the conflict, stated that both sides of the conflict are potentially guilty of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Consequently, they called for immediate intervention to safeguard civilians. However, Sudan’s foreign ministry, aligned with the Sudanese army, dismissed the UN Human Rights Council’s recommendations. It called the council a political and illegal body and labeled its recommendations a “flagrant violation” of its mandate. It also insisted that Sudan’s government prioritizes the protection of civilians.
