Sudan’s deputy head of the Sovereignty Council, Gen. Malik Agar, has said that Khartoum has no intention of going to war with Ethiopia, even as he accused Addis Ababa of taking an increasingly hostile stance along their shared border. The statement follows accusations from the Sudanese army’s chief of staff that Ethiopia is exploiting Sudan’s civil war to seize disputed territory. He also accused Addis Ababa of allowing the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces to launch drones from Ethiopian soil, claims the Ethiopian government denies. Neither government appears to want direct war, but the rhetoric raises the risk of a confrontation. The immediate priority for Khartoum is maintaining territorial control without opening another front. Yet, prolonged tensions could complicate regional diplomacy and further internationalize Sudan’s war.
