In a significant symbolic move, Sudan’s government is officially returning to the national capital, Khartoum, after nearly three years of operating from Port Sudan. Prime Minister Kamil Idris announced the return, pledging to restore essential services to a city devastated by the ongoing civil war with the Rapid Support Forces. Khartoum endured intense fighting, leading to widespread destruction and the displacement of millions. Although a fragile calm now exists, the city’s infrastructure is crippled, with reconstruction costs estimated at $350 million. While the government’s return marks a step toward normalcy, conflict persists in other regions, perpetuating a massive humanitarian crisis and underscoring how fragile Sudan’s recovery remains.
