Taiwan Criticizes Kenya Over Delegate Deportations

Taiwan has accused Kenya of detaining and deporting two delegates en route to the Our Ocean Conference in Mombasa, alleging that Chinese pressure influenced the decision. According to Taiwan’s foreign ministry, the scholars had their passports and phones confiscated and were held for more than 20 hours before being expelled, actions the ministry condemned as violations of human rights and international norms. Taiwan’s Ocean Affairs Council said visas were revoked at the last minute, calling the move “barbaric obstruction” that undermines global cooperation on ocean governance. Kenyan officials defended the decision, citing the country’s adherence to the “One China” policy and arguing that Taiwanese passports do not constitute valid travel documentation for official state events.
