Tangier’s Historic Casa d’Italia Reopens After Revamp

By FT·Edited by Editor TO·

One of Tangier’s best-loved restaurants has reopened under a new name following an eight-month renovation. Casa d’Italia occupies part of the former Moulay Hafid Palace, built in 1912 and later bought by Mussolini’s government in 1927. The building, which remains the property of the Italian state, is used for cultural events. The restaurant became a gathering place for Tangier’s Italian community in the 1950s before attracting Moroccan residents and European visitors with its Italian cuisine, nostalgic interiors, and garden-facing veranda. The restaurant has now been rebranded as Palazzo d’Italia by its new operator, who aims to preserve the venue’s historic atmosphere while improving its food and service. Vintage photographs now document the building’s past, while updated lighting refreshes the interiors. The new menu emphasizes traditional Italian dishes, including oversized veal cutlets, seafood pasta, anchovies, pizza, tiramisu, and gelato.
