Tanzania Opens Government Bonds to All Foreigners

By CNBC Africa·Edited by Editor TO·

Tanzania’s central bank has lifted restrictions on foreign ownership of government Treasury bills and bonds, opening the market to all international investors for the first time. Previously, only investors from the East African Community, the Southern African Development Community, and the Tanzanian diaspora could participate. The central bank said the reform is designed to deepen domestic financial markets and strengthen Tanzania’s appeal as an investment destination. The move comes as President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government searches for new revenue streams following cuts in international aid. Hassan, in power since 2021, won a disputed election last year that opposition figures say was rigged and marred by unrest after her top rivals were barred from running. She has dismissed criticism of her human rights record and defended the vote’s integrity.
