Tanzania Opposition Chief Awaits Verdict in Treason Trial

Source: Africanews·Edited by Editor TO·

A Tanzanian court is set to deliver its verdict on November 6 in the treason trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, who faces a possible death sentence. Lissu, head of the main opposition party Chadema, has been jailed for more than 18 months. He was arrested in 2025 after addressing a rally demanding electoral reforms. Rights advocates say the case is intended to silence opposition voices, while Lissu’s supporters fear a conviction would leave the party without an effective leader to challenge the government. He previously survived an assassination attempt in 2017, when he was shot 16 times, and has spent periods in exile citing threats to his safety.
