Tanzania Opposition Leader Ends Hunger Strike

Source: Al Jazeera·Edited by Editor TO·

Tanzanian opposition leader Tundu Lissu has reportedly ended his hunger strike after prison authorities allowed him to meet privately with his lawyers. Lissu, who heads CHADEMA and placed second in the 2020 presidential election, reportedly began refusing food after his lawyers were denied entry. However, the prison service denied that he was on hunger strike, saying he was safe. Lissu was arrested in April 2025 after calling for electoral reforms and charged with treason over an alleged appeal to disrupt the general election. He has denied the charge, and his lawyers say the case is politically motivated. His detention and reports of abductions of government critics have intensified scrutiny of President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s human rights record. The case could further test public confidence in Tanzania’s institutions and the credibility of its political process.
