Tundu Lissu, a prominent opposition leader in Tanzania, was arrested after addressing a political rally in Mbinga, a town in Southwestern Tanzania. According to his party, Chadema, the authorities have not provided any clear reason for his detention. Nevertheless, they maintain that they are closely monitoring the situation to determine his whereabouts. Lissu’s arrest comes amid growing attacks on Tanzanian opposition figures, raising concerns over the state of political freedoms in the country. His rally, part of a larger effort to mobilize voters and push for electoral reform ahead of the upcoming general election, has highlighted tensions in the lead-up to the vote. Consequently, human rights groups fear that without meaningful reforms, the legitimacy of the election could be jeopardized.
