CHADEMA, Tanzania’s main opposition party, has been banned from participating in the country’s upcoming elections due to its failure to sign the mandatory code of conduct. This decision comes just days after CHADEMA leader Tundu Lissu, a former presidential candidate, was charged with treason for allegedly seeking to disrupt the vote. If found guilty, Lissu could be sentenced to death. Meanwhile, the disqualification not only affects CHADEMA’s participation in the presidential and parliamentary elections in October but also extends to all by-elections until 2030. Critics view this move as part of a broader crackdown on political opposition by President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government, which has faced accusations of human rights violations.
