Tanzania’s main opposition party, Chadema, is gearing up for the October 2025 elections. Before that, however, the party has to decide on a leader as well as its flagbearer for the upcoming election. Chadema’s leadership options lie between the current chairman, Freeman Mbowe, and his deputy, Tundu Lissu, with both men having differing opinions on the party’s future direction. Where Mbowe advocates for continuity, highlighting past successes, Lissu calls for transformative changes and a redistribution of Chadema’s resources to include grassroots members. He also advocates for structured leadership transitions, including the reintroduction of term limits. Despite their differences, Mbowe and Lissu are united in challenging the ruling CCM (Chama Cha Mapinduzi) party, which has dominated Tanzanian politics since 1964.
