Tanzania’s Vice-President Emmanuel Nchimbi has announced his resignation and plans to retire from public life, becoming the first vice-president to take such a step since the country gained independence in 1964. The 54-year-old said he would leave office at the end of next week, less than 10 months after taking the position. In a letter to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, Nchimbi said he was honoring a promise to resign if the president decided she needed a different deputy. His departure follows reports of tensions between the two leaders. Nchimbi previously served as secretary-general of the ruling CCM and held several senior government and diplomatic positions. In his letter, he expressed gratitude to the president, his party, and Tanzanians, affirming his continued loyalty as a citizen.
