A high-stakes rivalry is intensifying between Ghana’s Port of Tema and Côte d’Ivoire’s Port of Abidjan to become West Africa’s dominant trade gateway to the landlocked Sahel region. Both hubs are making multi-billion-dollar investments to capture this vital cargo trade. Tema is surging ahead with a massive expansion, injecting over $1 billion to nearly double its container capacity to 3.7 million TEUs and launching a new railway link to Burkina Faso. Meanwhile, the established leader, Abidjan, continues to leverage its deep regional roots and larger cargo volumes. While Abidjan currently holds the edge in overall throughput, Tema’s aggressive growth and specialized northern corridor strategy position it to potentially become the region’s premier logistics hub in the coming years.
