Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has secured the ruling All Progressives Congress presidential ticket for the 2027 election after winning the party’s primary by an overwhelming margin. Tinubu secured nearly 11 million votes, compared with about 16,500 for little-known challenger Stanley Osifo, clearing the way for his bid for a second and final four-year term. The victory strengthens Tinubu’s political standing after an opposition effort to unite behind a single candidate collapsed earlier this month. Since taking office in 2023, Tinubu has implemented sweeping economic reforms, including removing fuel and electricity subsidies, loosening foreign exchange controls, and restructuring tax policies. While the reforms have earned praise from international investors, they have also increased living costs for many Nigerians, making economic conditions likely to dominate the upcoming campaign.
