South Africa’s state-owned ports and rail operator, Transnet, is seeking up to $2.2 billion from the National Treasury to fund infrastructure projects through 2030. The proposed funding would supplement $817 million already received from the government’s Infrastructure Budget Facility, including funds to repair iron and coal rail corridors and upgrade the Durban container terminal. The investment is considered crucial to reversing years of underperformance and addressing transport constraints that have hampered economic growth. Meanwhile, Transnet recently reached agreements with 11 private train operators for access to its rail network, a move expected to add 24 million tons of freight capacity within 18 months. The company has other reforms planned to boost service delivery, including the introduction of a privately operated floating dock at Cape Town’s port and a port community system that will improve coordination among shipping companies and agents.
