Turkey’s foreign minister, Hakan Fidan, has revealed that the recently signed Mecca defense pact between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan could be expanded to include Egypt and other regional states. Fidan stated that Egypt could join the grouping, provisionally known as the “Mecca Alliance” or “Mecca Defense Alliance,” once several technical issues are resolved. Egypt’s participation would bring one of the Middle East’s largest militaries into the emerging security framework. It would also add another major Sunni Muslim-majority country to the alliance, alongside Pakistan, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. The agreement was signed in Mecca against the backdrop of the US-Iran war and commits members to jointly respond to attacks against allies. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar echoed Fidan’s comments, stating in a social media post that the alliance is open to countries willing to uphold its principles and resolve differences peacefully.
