Military officials from Uganda and Burundi have visited Israel to discuss possible participation in an international security force proposed for Gaza. Uganda, whose parliament has already approved participation, is finalizing details for roughly 1,200 personnel, while Burundi’s involvement remains under discussion. If confirmed, the two nations would join Morocco, Kosovo, Kazakhstan, and Albania in committing troops to the initiative. The proposed mission would be led by the US and would monitor the ceasefire, train Palestinian police, and help secure humanitarian aid. Experts note that Uganda and Burundi bring significant peacekeeping experience from lengthy deployments in Somalia against al-Shabab. Meanwhile, participating in the Gaza mission could provide both countries with financial and material support for their militaries as the Somalia mission winds down. Progress has been slow, however, amid disagreements over Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and Hamas’ disarmament.
