Uganda is exploring plans to connect its planned Standard Gauge Railway to Tanzania’s expanding rail network, potentially creating a new export corridor to the port of Dar es Salaam. The proposed line would run from the Tanzanian border through southern Uganda to Mpondwe on the frontier with the Democratic Republic of Congo, linking mineral-rich regions to international markets. Currently, most of landlocked Uganda’s exports move through Kenya’s port of Mombasa, but officials hope the new route will reduce transport costs and improve efficiency. The Democratic Republic of Congo could eventually join the network, raising the prospect of a broader regional trade corridor. Kampala has already submitted a funding request for preparatory studies for the project to the African Development Bank.
