Ugandan opposition leader fleeing following threats of elimination amid political unrest.
Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine has broken his silence, telling the BBC that he fled the country fearing for his life after January’s disputed election. Speaking from an undisclosed location, Wine—whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu—said he spent two months hiding with the help of supporters before leaving the country. The pop star-turned-politician claims authorities repeatedly targeted him after he challenged the election results, allegations the government denies. His fears intensified after Museveni’s son and military chief General Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly stated Wine was “wanted dead or alive”—a post later deleted. Despite now being abroad, Wine says he still feels unsafe and fears for members of his opposition party who remain in Uganda. He vows to continue to guide his supporters from abroad and to eventually return.
