Uganda’s aquaculture sector achieves a major trade win with increased fish exports.
Uganda has secured a major trade win after receiving approval to export aquaculture fish products to the European Union. The development confirms that Uganda’s fish farmers meet the bloc’s strict compliance with health and safety standards. The decision ends years of restrictions on animal-based exports and opens the door to one of the world’s most lucrative food markets. Beyond boosting foreign exchange earnings, the move is expected to attract new investment into the country’s fish farming, processing, and cold-chain infrastructure. It also gives small and medium-scale farmers a powerful incentive to improve quality, traceability, and sustainability practices. While maintaining EU standards will be demanding, the approval positions Uganda to deepen agricultural value addition and expand its global export footprint.
