Uganda’s Beekeeping Industry Offers Economic Potential

Uganda’s climate and abundant vegetation make the country well suited to beekeeping, an industry increasingly viewed as a source of income for the country’s rural dwellers. According to the Uganda National Apiculture Development Organization’s 2025 report, apiculture contributed about $61 million to the economy and supported more than 1 million livelihoods. Over the course of the year, honey production reached 15,609 tons, up from the previous year’s figure. However, industry officials believe Uganda could produce even more. Estimates put the number at up to 500,000 metric tons of honey annually, highlighting significant room for expansion. Based on 2025 figures, this could see the country earn as much as $1.95 billion from beekeeping alone.
