UK’s Africa Strategy Faces Uncertainty

Keir Starmer entered office in 2024 promising to rebuild Britain’s relationship with Africa through investment, trade, and long-term partnerships. While his government strengthened ties with countries such as South Africa and Nigeria through initiatives in infrastructure, technology, and critical minerals, many projects failed to deliver measurable results before Starmer resigned in June 2026. Internal reshuffles removed key architects of the Africa strategy, while global crises in Ukraine and the Middle East diverted attention and resources. Shrinking UK aid spending, expected to fall further by 2027, compounded the drift. While the UK remains an influential diplomatic partner, particularly through the UN Security Council, experts argue the next government must demonstrate greater consistency if it hopes to rebuild trust and sustain meaningful engagement across Africa.
