The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution replacing the widely used Mercator projection with one that more accurately represents Africa’s true size. The measure, championed by Togo and supported by African Union members, was approved by 164 nations, including France and the UK. The US, however, opposed it, becoming the only country to do so, while six other nations abstained. The resolution, which is non-binding, is expected to influence map use across global institutions. The centuries-old Mercator projection has long been criticized for making Africa roughly the same size as Greenland, despite being 14 times larger. Advocates of the “Correct the Map” measure argue that the distortion has diminished perceptions of Africa’s scale, resources, and development potential. However, a US representative dismissed the vote as a distraction from more pressing global issues.
